Flexing my design muscle is one of my favourite th Flexing my design muscle is one of my favourite things to do. And I was asked to do exactly that recently and design a leadership pin for Marcellin College's Leadership team. The brief was a lapel pin that could be worn publicly without obvious religious and school affiliations.

The above is what I came up with ( . . . .eventually!)

The vase/"fish symbol" represents Christianity. The fish symbol was a way that early Christians used to secretly identify themselves to each other, without the government or opposing religious leaders recognizing them during a time of persecution.

The three Amethyst represent the Marist Brothers, as their emblem is three violets, which stands for the Marist virtues of HUMILITY, SIMPLICITY, MODESTY that St. Marcellin Champagnat (who the school is named after) wanted every member of the Marist family to practice.

And lastly the background writing is the College's Latin motto: VIRTUTE AD ALTISSIMA (repeated) which means literally "to the highest with virtue" or “Through virtue and courage to strive for the highest”.

Okay, who has heard of #labgrowndiamonds ? Did you Okay, who has heard of #labgrowndiamonds ? Did you know that Lab Grown Diamonds are now available on the jewellery market? And you know something shocking! . . . They are chemically the same, they look, feel and sparkle, just like their Earth Mined counterparts, without the need to dig great caverns into the Earth! They are a fraction of the price and most jewellers can't tell the difference between the two!

So why wouldn't you pick Lab Grown? Especially for these 0.75ct each Diamond studs! More Bling for less Dollars!

My completed piece for @sandramcewenjewelry #ename My completed piece for @sandramcewenjewelry #enamelartjam2022 Not sure my skill level stacks up against the other entrants, but you don't know till you try!

My theme words were "Thunderous traveller" and I dont know about you, but I definitely have a thunderous traveller who emerges, and sometimes over the most trivial of things. This is why I chose to illustrate "A storm in a teacup".

This piece was made using, Fine silver, leaded enamel, silver cloisonne wires and silver foil.

This is the biggest piece I have made and I learnt so many things through so many mistakes. For example:

I'm not ready/ practised enough to tackle big fusing jobs (After several attempts I got scared of melting the fine silver and I had to break out the solder. I apparently also stressed the metal to the point where it developed a few hairline cracks).

Opaque colours are far more temperamental with firing temperatures (I burnt the edges of the white and pink colours).

There is also an important difference between foil and leaf (The lightning strike is alittle thick) and I need to be more careful with enamel spillage out of the cloisonne cells.

Every grain matters!
I have been quietly working away on my #enamelartj I have been quietly working away on my #enamelartjam2022 piece. If you have watched my highlights, my theme is THUNDEROUS TRAVELLER and I got all excited about fulgurite . . . And then I realised . . . This is an enamelling challenge. So I have refocussed my efforts!

Well, good things come to those who wait! Happy be Well, good things come to those who wait! Happy belated Birthday to me!

I spied this #ArtDeco style ring in an Antique Jewellers in the city a few years ago while window shopping (back in the pre-covid days) and fell in love.

I waited patiently . . . and eventually found time to reward myself with this little beauty!

And those who know me, might be able to calculate that this present is a little overdue for my most recent significant birthday!  But, as I said, good things come to those who wait!
